how can I rapidly improve my career prospects and professional effectiveness?
As an Executive and Career Coach I realise time and time again that times are tough! Corporations and the private sector have been greatly affected by the global melt-down in the financial markets and the resulting credit crunch, coupled with the loss of UK productivity (that fell off a cliff in 2009 and is still faltering), and the loss of markets. Closures, mergers and acquisitions are commonplace, and senior managers need to employ the tactics of the successful in order to secure their careers and the possibilities for future advancement.
Life’s no sweeter in the public sector. For the foreseeable future UK public expenditure will significantly contract with the resulting pressures on staffing levels. First will be admin and back office staff, then middle and senior management posts will go as decision-makers struggle to retain priority front line services. This is turn will affect the private sector with an almost certain contraction in consumer spending.
If all this sounds all too familiar, and YOU are thinking of boosting your management skills and talents, or enhancing your executive and non-exec chances, or wanting to improve your strategic and operational effectiveness, or even your personal and professional influence, and / or your career progression and relationship management then… support is at hand from a qualified Executive and Career Coach.
Ask yourself, honestly…
“What am I doing to secure my career prospects in this time of change and potential turmoil?”
An essential ingredient of successful Career Planning is learning to access all your complex talents. All too often management and business school training is devoted to so-called objective and factual thinking, and yet emotional intelligence and more often these days, your soul’s deep intelligence, are essential components for effective self-management and career success in testing times. These 21st Century skills act by increasing your acuity, influence and impact, and importantly your ability to manage your own career and business destiny.
All of this is wisdom is combined with YOUR particular context and challenge, however, career coaching is no magic bullet – without your own determination and will to take on board new revelations and learning.
As an Executive and Career Coach my approach to career planning has been developed after talking to scores of people struggling with getting to grips with who they really are, what motivates them, and what skills and abilities they can very usefully develop. I support you by not only providing you with a ‘safe, confidential space’ in order to explore your immediate challenges and longer-term aspirations, but I also support the balance of your learning and development:

Stage 2: help you get a better handle of your current performance in your role with a view to immediate improvement:
- Key Skill Sets
- Your profile in the workplace via feedback (eg bespoke 360 degree review)
- Observation in real-time
- Apply the results of your Motivational Map (to improve your career direction decisions and a more satisfying application of your skills sets)
Stage 3: working with you to actively appraise and better utilise your immediate context and opportunity structure via the following activities:
- Professional external networking
- Joining internal networks

Managing your own successful career as a change agent and leader, whether in senior, executive or non-executive positions will depend on the acquisition of what for you may be challenging ways of thinking and working.
As part of our Career Coaching relationship, I’ll encourage you to reflect on the Tactics of the Successful. Stephen R Covey (RIP) in his book ‘The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People’ talks about “Self-Mastery” as the key to effective leadership and success:
SUCCESS HABIT 1: Be Proactive (realise that you can create your own destiny, take charge now!)
SUCCESS HABIT 2: Begin with the End in Mind (mentally rehearse your own success)
SUCCESS HABIT 3: Put First things First (develop effective self-management, become ‘efficient with things and effective with people’)
SUCCESS HABIT 4: Think Win-Win (develop the right frame of mind and improve relationships and improve team work)
SUCCESS HABIT 5: Seek first to Understand, then to be Understood (seek to understand the principles of co-operation and empathetic communication)
SUCCESS HABIT 6: Seek Synergy (bringing it all together and applying the principles of creative cooperation)
SUCCESS HABIT 7: Action Regular Renewal by ‘Sharpening the Saw’ (your learning should never stop… utilise your physical, spiritual, mental and social / emotional well-being)
